Dalia Khichdi/Broken or Cracked wheat Khichdi or Samba gothumai rava khichdi is a healthy delicious, Soothing, easy to prepare. It can be had for breakfast or lunch or for dinner. It gives a complete meal feeling. I have added vegetables and dal, to make it more nutritious. Today let us learn how to make daliya (broken wheat) khichdi easy recipe.

 Let’s see how to make easy daliya (broken wheat) khichdi recipe.

 

  • Prep Time: 10 mins
  • Cook Time: 15 – 20 mins
  • Serves: 2

Ingredients needed:

  • Broken wheat /Daliya – Little less than 1 cup
  • Moong dal – 2 tbsp.
  • Onion Medium size – 1
  • Ginger garlic – Paste/Crushed – 1 tsp
  • Carrot – 1
  • Beans – 6 to 8 strings
  • Green chilies – 3
  • Chili powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt as needed

For the Seasoning:

  • Ghee – 2 tsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves few

Preparation:

  1. Finely Chop – Onions, carrot, beans; Slit green chilies
  2. Dry roast broken wheat and moong dal separately, until a little hot to touch or until you get a slight aroma.
  3. Soak broken wheat and moong dal in 3 cups of water for 10 minutes. (Wheat + Moong dal = 1 cup: 3 cup of water)

 

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker,  add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves, finely chopped onions, green chilies, ginger garlic paste/crushed and little salt
  2. Cook until Onion turns light brown, add Chopped carrots and beans; Saute for 5 mins. Add 1/2 a tsp of salt and chilli powder.
  3. Add soaked wheat rava and moong dal along with the water; For 1 cup of broken wheat + moong dal –3 cups of water is a measurement.
  4. Check for salt again; Pressure cook for 1 or 2 whistles.
  5. Once the pressure subsides, open the cooker, Serve hot with Butter milk and Pickles.

Quick , easy  and healthy meal – Broken wheat /Daliya khichdi is  ready.

Notes:

  1. You can also pressure cook it in a vessel inside the cooker; However you cook, take care not to burn it.
  2. Green peas, potato and cauli flower can also be added
  3. Chilli powder is optional; You can adjust it and green chilies accordingly.
  4. Khichdi is different from Upma. Khichdi should be soft and mushy.
