Crochet Learning #9: Half Double Crochet stitch

The half double crochet is a stitch; it is easy to learn; and it looks beautiful in hats, headbands, blankets because of its cozy stitching. The abbreviation for this stitch is (hdc).

Foundation Chain:  Make 3 more chain plus your foundation chain count (ch20+2) (Remember, we do + ch1 for SC stitch; +ch2 for HDC and +ch3 for DC stitch) (Refer Crochet Learnings #5: Crochet foundation chain to learn how to make a foundation chain)

Step 1: Yarn over the hook (yo) and Insert your hook into the 3rd chain from your hook which is ch20th.

Yarn over the hook (yo) and Pull through the chain. Now, there should be three loops on your hook

Step 2: Yarn over (yo) your hook and pull the yarn through all 3 loops on your hook.

After you pull through all 3 loops, there will be 1 loop on your hook and you have completed your 1st half double crochet stitch.

SECOND ROW:

Step 1: Ch2 and turn your work ; For HDC we should do ch2 for all rows and consider this ch2 as 1 hdc stitch; Also called as turning chain

Step 2: Yo and insert hook into the second stitch

Step 3: YO and pull through all 3 loops

Continue as before and complete as many rows you need.

Tips:

  1. Ch2 for HDC stitch
  2. For every new row: Ch2 and turn around; Consider Ch2 as 1 HDC

This is the steps to remember to do HDC stitch

ch20 + ch2, insert into 3rd ch from hook
Yo pull through – leaves 3 loops on hook
yo pull through all 3 loops – leaves 1 loop on hook – HDC stitch
