Onion pakoda recipe is a very popular snack recipe which can be prepared in 10 – 20 minutes. There are many variations in making pakodas, but this is my customized version with the readily available things. Let’s see how to make onion pakoda.

Ingredients needed:
- Onion big size – 2 nos (Chopped onions measuring 1 cup)
- Gram flour/besan – 3/4 cup
- Rice flour – 1/4 cup
- Red chili powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
- Fennel seeds – 1 tsp
- Asafetida – a pinch
- Green chili – 1 finely chopped
- Ginger – 2 inch finely chopped
- Curry leaves – few finely chopped
- Salt as needed
- Oil as needed
Method :
- Slice Onions roughly in length wise.
- Take a mixing bowl, add chopped onions and salt; Mix well and keep it aside for 10 minutes. It will start leaving moisture /water
- After 10 minutes: Add turmeric powder, chili powder, fennel seeds, green chili, ginger, curry leaves, besan flour and rice flour, 2 tsp of hot oil and salt as needed
- Mix everything together. If needed, add 2 tbsp of water to mix; Mixture should be thick enough.
- Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, when the oil is hot, put the onion mixture in a sprinkled way and deep fry in medium flame.
- Fry till golden color.
Serve hot as a coffee/tea time snack or as starter.
Note:
- Mixing 2 tsp of hot oil gives crispy pakoda and prevents sogginess.
- Don’t add more water to mix. It will not give crispy pakodas
- Adjust chili powder and green chilli
- If you don’t like, skip green chili, ginger and curry leaves.
- Rice flour should be half or less than besan flour
