The single crochet stitch is the most commonly used stitch in crochet.
Single crochet is abbreviated (sc) (This is important to know for pattern reading). Let’s learn the single crochet stitch.
Step 1: Make a foundation chain by chaining 30 stitches (ch 30) or as you need. (Refer Crochet Learnings #5: Crochet foundation chain to learn how to make a foundation chain)
Step 2: Make one more chain plus your foundation chain count (ch30+1)
Step 3: Now, Ignore the yarn loop on the hook, and the first chain below the hook which is an extra chain we made in step 2.
Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook. (Make sure you insert into the 2nd chain from hook.) Now, there should be two loops on your hook
Step 4: Yarn over (yo) your hook – by wrapping your yarn over the hook from back to front and twist until the hook is facing down.
Step 5: Pull the yarn through the first loop on your hook. Again there will be 2 loops on the hook now
Step 6: Yarn over (yo) again, twist and Pull yarn through both loops on your hook
Now there will be only one strand/loop on the hook (2nd picture above) and will also complete the first single crochet stitch. Make sure to continue the exact same stitch pattern throughout your entire foundation chain.
