Pachai payaru masala / Green moong dal masala for Chappati / Roti
Green gram or Pachai payaru in Tamil is fibre rich and protein rich. So, it is healthy, nutritious and tasty too. It makes a meal complete and wholesome. This can be sprouted to enhance its nutritious value. (I will add a separate video to show the home made sprouted grains).
This gravy is a quick and healthy recipe which is a perfect match for Chappathi / Roti.

Ingredients needed
- Green gram dal / Pachai payaru – 1 cup
- Onion(big) – 1 nos
- Tomato – 2 nos
- Chilli powder – 2 tbspn
- Corriander powder – 1 tbspn
- Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
- Hing powder / Perungayam – 1tsp
- Salt needed
For the seasoning
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds -1 tsp
- Urad dal – ½ tsp
- Fennel seeds / Soambu – 1 tsp
- Garlic / Poondu – 4 Pods
- Green chilli – 2

Method
- In a pressure cooker, add Whole green gram dal, chopped onions and tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder
- Add enough water and place the lid and weight
- Pressure cook 6 to 7 whistles
- If the dal is not mushy means, cook for 3 or more whistles to make it mushy
- In a separate pan, add oil, mustard, urad dal and fennel seeds
- Then add chopped garlic, and green chillies
- Add it to the cooked dal
- Cook for 3 more minutes by adding little water
Note –
- Hind powder/ Perungayam is a must; Since it is a DAL and we are having it for dinner, hing powder will helps in digestion
- Pressure cook for as many as whistles until it cooks mushy.
- If you have time, soak moong dal for 2 to 3 hours, which can reduce the number of whistles to cook it quickly
- Storage and Shelf Life – This gravy will stay good for 2 days in the refrigerator. Left over can be used for Dosa next day. Add little sesame oil and saute it before serving with Dosa
