Crochet Learnings # 10: How to Crochet in a circle
To begin a design that you work in rounds, you first must create a center ring. The center ring is the foundation for all crocheted designs that are worked in rounds — just like the foundation chain you use when working in rows. The center ring is the circle created by several chain stitches joined together to form a circle, or it can be just a single chain stitch.
I am going to be show you two different methods of creating a center ring
- The most common method for creating a center ring is to make a chain and close it into a ring with a slip stitch.
- Chain (ch) 6 or as it needed for projects.
- Insert your hook into the first chain stitch you made, forming a ring; Make slip knot or 1 sc ; Your center ring is now complete
- Now, you are ready for your first round and can continue doing stitches using the center ring. Can be any stitches – sc, dc, hdc, tc.
- Another method of creating a center ring is forming a magic ring or magic loop.
Crochet a circle that actually lies flat: –
- Start with right number of stitches
- SC: 6 – 8 stitches in round 1
- HDC: 10 stitches in round 1
- DC: 12-14 stitches in round 1
- Increase pattern for all circles
- Round 1: Recommended number of stitches; Say 6
- Round 2: 2 stitches in each stitch of round 1 (e.g.: If you do SC, now it will be 12 stitches)
- Round 3: Make 1 SC and 2 SC in the next stitch. 2 SC is an increase. Repeat this pattern — an increase into every other stitch. –> 1SC, 2SC
- Round 4: 1SC, 1SC, 2SC -> Repeat around
- Round 5: 1SC, 1SC, 1SC, 2SC -> Repeat around
- Round 6: 1SC, 1SC, 1SC, 1SC, 2SC -> Repeat around
With every round, you make one more single stitch between the increases.
Crochet a circle that grows vertically: –
- Start with right number of stitches
- Round 1: Recommended number of stitches; Say 6
- Round 2: 2 stitches in each stitch of round 1 (e.g.: If you do SC, now it will be 12 stitches)
- Round 3: Make 1 SC and 2 SC in the next stitch. 2 SC is an increase. Repeat this pattern — an increase into every other stitch. –> 1SC, 2SC
- Repeat the pattern as much as rows you need the flat circle (like plate)
- When you want to grow the circle vertically, start doing 1 SC in each stitch around. Continue doing it as many rows you want or to the height you needed
